Angelo Torres vs. Alvin Brown

Alvin controlled most of the first round by using his Left Jab and movement.  Angelo got in a few punches late in the round but Alvin easily got the round.  Both fighters performed well in the second round.  Alvin controlled the first minute of the round while Torres landed two sets of double-Lefts in the middle of the round.  Alvin came back in the last minute of round by throwing power punches which was nice to see from Alvin.  It was a change from his normal counter punching style.  I give the second round to Alvin.  The third round was close as Alvin won the first half of the round while Angelo won the second half.  Angelo landed a couple of good body shots on Alvin.  I gave the round to Angelo but it was very close.  Strong round by Alvin in the fourth.  Alvin landed several heavy Right Hooks to the body.  Another powerful Over-Hand Right was enough to give the fourth round to Alvin.  Alvin used a stiff jab to start the round, heavy Right Hooks to the body, and then the Over-Hand Right to close out the round.  Angelo came back to dominated the fifth round.  He got inside and stayed there.  While Alvin would dip down, Angelo would land shots on the inside.  Torres also landed a stunning Left Jab flush to the face as Alvin was coming in causing Brown to step back.  He was not hurt but it was obvious to see the effectiveness of the punch.  The sixth round was close.  I gave the round to Alvin because he forced the action and Angelo was on the run.  Torres did land some good shots it is just that Brown did more work.  The seventh round was a toss-up as neither fighter established himself.  The eighth round was close as well but I gave the round to Torres because he blocked most of Brown's punches while landing some of his own.  Alvin did more work in the round but they were being blocked.  It depends on what the judges saw.  Did they see the work and not the blocks.  If they did not see the blocks, they could easily give the round to Alvin.  The ninth round was full of action.  At first, Alvin's punches were getting blocked and Angelo's were landing.  Later, Alvin landed three Over-Hand Rights and two Right Upper-Cuts.  Late in the round, Angelo landed two Right Hooks to the body that doubled Brown over.  He did not go down but it obviously hurt.  The bookend work of Torres earned the round in my opinion.  Excellent action in the tenth round as both fighters traded blows.  Some punches were blocked and some were dodged while many other got through.  Angelo blocked and Alvin dodged.  I gave the round to Torres because he landed more punches than Brown.  It could have gone the other way.  Angelo landed more power punches in the eleventh round to earn the round.  I recall two Over-Hand Rights in particular that stood out in my mind.  Lots of action in the twelfth round as both fighters gave it their all.  Again, I felt Torres was more effective.  Here is how I have the fight:  I gave Alvin four rounds, Torres six round, and I had one toss-up round.  The judges had the score 116-113 Torres, 115-113 Brown, and 116-112 Torres for a split-decision in Angelo's favor.

Going back over my notes, this fight could have gone either way.  That is obvious by the split decision.  Angelo's corner they would gladly have a rematch and I hope it happens.  I would look forward to that rematch.

Alvin Brown (20-6) vs. Chuck Dairy (8-10-1)

1st rd to Alvin though not much happened.  Chuck was stunned by a Straight-right in the 2nd but did not go down.  Dairy stayed up and instinctively punched back. Chuck tried but no power in his punches.  Alvin hurt Dairy in the 3rd rd with a Left-hook to the body.  A Left Upper-cut punctuated this fight dominated by Brown.  The Left Upper-cut not only knocked Dairy down, it caused him to roll over his shoulder.  He was obviously hurt but he almost got up before the 10 count.  Complete and total domination by Brown.

Alvin Brown (21-6) vs. Mark Burse (11-6)

This was a fantastic fight.  It went the full 12 rounds and was a split decision.

The first round was a toss-up with both fighters performing well.  Alvin landed a good Overhand-Right in 2nd but Mark threw more punches.  Alvin did more work in 3rd rd while Mark had a better 4th rd.  Alvin gets the 5th rd and it appeared that Burse was tiring.  The 6th round seemed again to be a toss-up to me.  The 7th rd began with Brown in control then about halfway through, Burse came on strong.  I think Mark won the 7th.  Burse also got the 8th by landing cleaner shots.  The 9th rd was close.  I felt Mark won the round with cleaner punches again - but a case could be made for Alvin getting the round.  The 10th was a complete toss-up to me.  I gave the last two rounds to Alvin because he continued to execute his fight plan which was to jab the much taller opponent.

The size contrast was significant and it was hard for Alvin to land his jab but he continued to throw it the entire fight.  There were many times that Burse buckled Alvin with his jab while Brown was trying to get inside; however, neither fighter was hurt up stairs. Up stairs no but both showed signs of pain when hit with Left-Hooks to the body.  Another point that needs to be made, Alvin spent much of the fight going backwards.  Many times the aggressor is given close rounds.

There was a mixed reaction when the scores were announced.  One judge had it 118-110 for Brown, another had it 117-112 for Burse, and the final judge had it 116-112 for Brown.  After the final score was announced, Burse dropped to his knees in angst and Alvin showed relief and joy at his victory.  The crowed, well, Alvin's posse went nuts and others in the crowd lightly booed.  I would have to say that in a different location, the result could have been the other way; however, that is boxing.

Alvin Brown (23-6,11 KO) vs. Mark Thompson (9-0,? KO)

A lot of posing in the first round with Alvin at lease throwing punches.  Despite not many landing I gave the first round to Brown.  A couple of flurries by Brown in the second earns him the round.  Alvin got an eight count from a Left Hook in the third round.  Two eight counts for Brown in the fourth round.  The first from a Left Hook and the second by a Left/Right combination.  Another Left Hook to the body earns Brown yet another eight count in the fifth round.  Another Left Hook by Brown but this time it was low.  While the ref was giving Mark time to recover, Mark's corner threw in the towel giving Alvin a TKO victory at 1:25 of the fifth round.

Priest Smalls (16-7-1) vs. Alvin Brown (23-6)

This was for the NABO Featherweight Title.  It was a feeling out period in the first as both fighters attempted to land haymakers with none of them landing.  Alvin had a nice attack with Priest against the ropes to earn a close first round.  A close second round with Smalls earning it with a strong Over Hand Right.  The third was a toss-up for me with not too many punched landed despite plenty being thrown.  A quality fourth round going to Priest due to three Straight Right Hands one of which slightly buckled Brown.  Alvin came back in the fifth round and earned the round with a short Right Upper Cut.  Another close round in the sixth with Alvin landing an Over Hand Right to earn the round.  It was toss-up seventh round for me as most punches were blocked or missed.  Priest definitely gets eighth round due to three Over Hand Rights, one Right Upper Cut, and one short Right Hand all of which scored.  I had the ninth a toss-up as the flurry at the end did nothing to decide the round in my eyes.  Priest earned the tenth round with a late Over Hard Right.  Priest definitely gets the eleventh round with with more Over Hand Rights.  I felt the twelfth was again a toss-up.  For me, that makes it five rounds for Priest, three rounds for Alvin, and four toss-up rounds.  Here is what the real judges thought: 118-110, 119-109, and 118-110 for an unpopular unanimous decision for Priest Smalls.
