Battle Star XXI November 10 2004 Event was held at the Ameristar Casino in Kansas City, Missouri. Jesse Shewmaker vs. Jeremy
Shuey Jesse Shewmaker (0-0) vs. Jeremy Shuey (0-2) Jesse was too much for Jeremy in this match-up. Jesse used Left Hooks and Right Upper-Cuts to overwhelm Jeremy at 1:02 of the 1st round. The punches were quick and tight. Jeremy Stiers (4-3) vs. Ron Baker (1-3) Jeremy used his jab to fight through Ron's high-hands defense. After changing up and going to the body to bring the defense down, Jeremy got an eight count with a Straight Right. Ron made it to the end of the round. The 2nd round was all Jeremy as he got three knockdowns before the ref stopped the fight at 1:44 of the 2nd round. Rico Lane (15-1-1) vs. Chuck Dairy (8-12-1) Lots of punches by Chuck in the 1st round but most of them were blocked. Rico landed three Right Hooks to the body in the 2nd round that softened Chuck and then a short Right for a flash knockdown. Chuck got up and began to unload punches of his own. During the exchange, Rico landed a low-blow. The recovery time of the low-blow allowed Chuck to make it to the bell. Rico gained total control in the 3rd round using a barrage of Left/Right Hooks causing Chuck to go down to quit getting hit. Chuck got up only to get caught with a Left Hook/ Right Upper-Cut combination that sent Chuck down and forced the ref to stop the fight. This was a nice bounce back performance by Rico after his first loss. Josh Sosa (3-0) vs. Lee Cargle (34-94-1) Josh controlled this entire fight. Lee was content to let Josh throw punches into his defense. This was a nice work-out fight for Sosa because he got the throw a lot of punches and not take very many at all. The fact that the fight went all six round gave me ample opportunity to see Josh's full arsenal. Josh would throw Left Hook/Right Cross combinations most of the fight. Josh did eventually use his Right Upper-Cut to get under Lee's defense. Josh showed great hand speed on all of his punches. When the dust settled, all three judges saw the fight 60-54 for Sosa. Donovan Castaneda (5-1) vs. Keith Clevenger (9-0) Donovan came out with power from the start. He landed a Left Hook/Right Upper-Cut combination that stunned Keith in the 1st round. More Left Hooks caused damage in the 2nd round as one particular shot to the body caused Keith to cringe. From this point until the 6th round, it appeared Keith either had a right rib injury or a left leg injury as he locked his right elbow against his body. One thing is for sure, Keith has a good chin as he took many Left Hooks and Right Crosses point blank and survived. Keith did pick up his side of the action in the 4th round but not enough to win the round. The 5th round saw Donovan get an eight count on a punch that coincided with a slip (well that is what it looked like to me). Keith was not hurt. Keith seemed to be over his rib/leg ailment in the 6th as he moved better. Keith was not, however; able to mount any kind of meaningful attack. Donovan did seem to lose some power on his punched late in the fight but did enough each round for the judges to give him a 60-53 unanimous decision. Leroy Childs (10-0) vs. Peter Ford (0-0) Unfortunately, Leroy's original opponent must have cancelled because Peter was not on the pre-printed fight card. The 1st round did not see much action as both men stocked around the ring. A little more action in the 2nd round as Peter got close enough Leroy could land a couple of shots. I am not sure if it was the 2nd or 3rd round when Leroy landed a Lead Right Hand followed by a Left Hook that sent Peter to the canvas. Peter made it to his feet but the ref could see in his eyes that he was done for a TKO at 2:29 of the round. After the fight, Leroy took the microphone and thanked everyone for coming out. He said that every fight could not be a knock-out (referring to his IBC Continental Heavyweight Title victory in his previous fight) and then said that in time he would bring a World Heavy Weight Championship to Kansas City Missouri. Keith Simms (22-11-1) vs. Will Evans (8-4) Active 1st round with both fighters landing some good punches. I felt Keith landed the better punches. Will won the second round despite a late Lead Left and a Left/Right combination. Keith controlled the 3rd despite wild shots by Will. Keith was able to easily doge Will's wide punches. The 4th round one again saw Keith dodging Will's punches while landing his own Straight Left Hands. It was a fairly even landing round in the 5th with Keith landing a few more to get the round. The 6th round was mainly Will flailing and Keith dodging and I gave the round to Keith due to three good Straight Left hands. The land ratio at this point was 3-1 in Simms' favor. More Lead Left Hands by Simms in he 7th gave him the round. It appeared that Evans began to land punches in the 8th, at least from my vantage point. They could have been blocked as Keith had his back to me and was caught against the ropes. I gave the 8th round to Evans. Keith regained control in the 9th round as he landed a strong three punch combination and then finished the round with more Straight Left Hands. The 10th round was tough to score but I gave it to Will due to an effective flurry mid-way through the round. Keith again came back in the 11th round with his effective Straight Left Hands. Obviously the Straight Left Hands were to key to Keith's attack. Will came at Simms with everything he had in the 12th round and even knocked Keith down. Keith looked hurt but was able to beat the count. Evans tried to finish the deal but he had to take a couple of moments to regain his breath and when he did start to unload, Keith would clinch. Keith was able to make it to the bell without being knocked out so we go to the score cards. Here are the judges scores: 116-111, 114-113, and 117-110 all for the unanimous winner Keith Simms.
