Clash of the Titans II November 19 2004 Event was held at Union Station in Kansas City, Missouri. A large crowd at Union Station was again treated to fantastic boxing. There was great atmosphere created by the large and loud crowd. Their involvement increased the enjoyment of the event. Aaron Drake vs. Derrick Campos Aaron Drake (3-0) vs. Derrick Campos (0-0) Tough 1st round as both fighters throw lots of punches. Aaron Drake seemed to get a little bit better of it even though both threw Hooks and Upper-Cuts. Nice punches be young fighters. I gave the 1st round to Aaron Drake. Both fighters started out quick in the 2nd round. Aaron Drake forced Derrick against the ropes by using Left/Right combinations and Derrick countered this with a Lead Right Upper-Cut to move Aaron back. As the second half of the round went on, Aaron jabbed more and moved more to control the round. I gave the 2nd round to Aaron. Derrick appeared to be tiring in 3rd round and Aaron was much more active. When Derrick would throw, Aaron would step to the side avoiding the punch. Aaron had a nice Double Left-Jab, Right Cross, Left Hook to the body combination during the round which clinched round 3 for him. What a fantastic 4th round as Aaron unloaded shot after shot on Derrick Campos. Aaron landed Right/Left/Right/Left/Right/Right/Right but Derrick hung in there and continued to fight back. This was a great fight to open the night. Now to the score cards: 40-36, 40-35, 40-36 all for the unanimous winner Aaron Drake. Robert Kooser (6-1) vs. James Thomasee (0-0) The 1st round was close as James used his Left Jab a lot to keep Kooser at bay. Once Kooser figured out where the Jab was coming from, he began to block the jab. About midway through the round, Kooser landed a four or five punch combination that was the most action of the round. Kooser followed up the flurry by using his Jab to finish out the round. I gave the 1st round to Kooser because he blocked most Jabs against him and landed his Jabs late as well as the flurry mid-round. I gave the 2nd round to Thomasee simply because he did more work. Most of it was probably blocked but some got through as Robert had a bloody nose at the end of the round. James was using his reach and Jab to keep Kooser off of him and Kooser could not reach Thomasee's head. He should have started to go to the body at some point. Kooser forced the action in the 3rd round as he unloaded four consecutive Left-Hooks to the body that really took the sails out of James. James went back to his movement which kept Kooser from doing any more damage in round 3 but I still gave the round to Kooser. James came on in the last round and looked like he might have gotten Kooser wobbly but that may have been due to fatigue more so than a punch. I definitely give round 4 to Thomasee so that makes it a draw for me. James used his Jab effectively and when Kooser did force Thomasee into the corner Kooser would either stop after two punches or simply step back and let James out of the corner. Now for the judges decision: 40-36, 39-37, and 39-37 all to James Thomasee. A bit of a surprise to me but I can live with the decision. Glen Cusimano (0-0) vs. Alvin Smith 0-0) Here is how this fight went: Left/Right/Left/Right step back Left/Right/Left/Right step back by Glen. A Right Hook followed by another Left/Right/Left/Right forced Alvin into the corner where Glen landed a couple more shots before Alvin went down for the count at 0:37 of the 1st round. Glen Cusimano used Left/Right combinations with good speed on his punches to quickly dispose of Alvin Smith. A nice debut for Cusimano. Mary Ortega (25-2-1) vs. Leslie
McNamara (1-4) McNamara started to fire her Left hand right out of the gate but Mary would either dodge or block the Left. Mary landed two or three nice combinations in the 1st round. One was a Left Hook to the body followed by an Over-Hand Right to the head and then she reversed it with a Right Hook to the body and a Left Hook to the head. Mary controlled the 1st round as both fighters were content to trade punches. Mary opened the 2nd round with a powerful Right Hand that stunned Leslie but Leslie shook it off and started to throw as many punches as she could. Mary seemed content to take one punch so that she could land her three-punch combinations. Mary was warned twice for Low-Blows but they did not affect the outcome of the round as Mary was dishing out more punishment than she was receiving. Another active round in the 3rd. This time Mary earned the round by landing a Right Hook that literally sent Leslie's mouth piece over the ring-side officials and into the first row. It was quickly retrieved by her corner and the round continued. Mary won the 3rd round but she was getting too close to McNamara causing her punches to be smothered. Ortega needed to take a step back or to the side to free up her punches. The crowd was going nuts at the end of the 4th round. Mary landed seven straight Upper-Cuts but Leslie refused to go down. McNamara showed a lot of heart. Mary would either take one punch to land two or completely dodge Leslie's punches. Ortega finished impressively with those Right Upper-Cuts. All three judges saw the fight 39-37 for Mary Ortega. I am not sure what round Leslie won but all judges saw it the same way. Aaron Blake (0-0) vs. Tyler Seever (0-1) Lots of punches and lots of action in the 1st round. I felt Aaron got the better of it as he landed three Upper-Cuts and his Left/Right Combinations were also getting through Tyler's defense. Tyler did have a good stretch during the middle of the round as his punches finally began to get by Aaron's defense but Blake came back the last third of the round to close it out and earn the 1st round. The 2nd round was tough for me to score. Tyler came out and was able to establish his Jab until Aaron got Seever against the ropes and knocked him from one set of ropes to another. Tyler looked a little wobbly but he was able to gather himself. Then, Seever landed a clean Left/Right combination that stopped Blake in his tracks but did not knock him down. The 2nd round was very close but I gave it to Tyler because he book-ended the action. I called the 3rd round a toss-up as both men slowed due to fatigue. Tyler did go to the body but did not do enough in my eyes to outright win the round. Another good match-up comes to an end in the 4th. Both fighters were tired but did not let it stop them from giving it their all. Aaron landed some good Right Hooks and then a nice Left Hook to the chest which was enough to earn the round and the decision in my mind. The judges sided with me here as Aaron won a unanimous decision 39-37, 39-37, and 40-36. Josh Luteran (1-1) vs. Darrel Jackson (0-0) The fight started out with a flurry by both fighters with quick but wide punches. Josh caught Darrel with a shot behind the ear. Jackson simply backed up and then after a delay - buckled. It was a Left Jab followed by a Right Hook behind the ear that caused the damage. During the eight count, Darrel's corner threw in the towel because they could see that Jackson had no business continuing in this fight. The time of the TKO was 1:54 of the 1st round. Julius Fogle (0-0) vs. Tim
Allensworth (0-0) The breakdown of this fight goes like this. Fogle lands a stiff Jab that knocks Tim back two steps. Julius landed two more nice shots that turned Allensworth sideways where Fogle landed two powerful Right Hands that knocked Tim down for the count at 0:50 of the 1st round. Donnie McCrary (7-1-1) vs. Isaiah Henderson (8-2) I was really looking forward to this rematch. Donnie dominated the 1st round as he was able to dodge the Jab of Isaiah and caught Henderson with a quick Short Right Hook for a flash knockdown. McCrary could tell Henderson was not that hurt so he stayed patient, continued to dodge the Jab and land Lefts and Rights. Donnie easily gets the 1st round. The 2nd round ended abruptly. Donnie slipped in a neutral corner and as the ref came in to wipe off Donnie's gloves, Isaiah landed an incredible right hand that knocked McCrary out of the roped and instantly unconscious. Isaiah did not know the ref was stepping in and the ref immediately indicated that it was an accidental punch. The fight ended in a no-contest. Galen Brown (15-2-1) vs. Rick Camlin (33-4) I am going to break away from the round-by-round format for this review. Instead, I am going to give a synopsis. Rick was content to stay at a distance and try to fade back when Galen would throw punches. The punches that Galen landed looked stronger than they were due to this technique. It appeared that Camlin was trying to get Brown into later rounds hoping that Galen would tire or was trying to frustrate Galen into making a mistake. He did have Galen frustrated but Brown did not make a mistake. After seven rounds of waiting for an attack from Rick, Galen took matters into his own hands. He landed a body shot that signaled the weakness he needed to attack. Two more body shot and a big Right to the stomach doubled Camlin. Galen charged in for the kill and threw another punch that sent Rick to the canvas. As Camlin went down, Brown ran him over and Camlin landed funny on his arm. He was in obvious discomfort when he got back to his feet but the ref felt it was due to the punches and called the fight at 1:50 of the 8th round. This was a difficult fight for Galen because of the savvy of Camlin. Rick was hard to catch and hard to hit. I think it was a good learning experience for Galen because he had to find a way to force the action. Despite his frustration, Galen found a way to win and the future looks bright for Galen Brown.
