Fight for Freedom September 11 2004 Event was held at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka, Kansas. Review by Mark Graves A large crowd was treated to a full night of fighting Saturday night in
the capitol city of Topeka. Derrick Reed (7-6) vs. Ramon Garcia (0-0) Lots of action in first round with Derrick landing Left Hooks and Upper Cuts. Ramon used a one/two punch for his offense. Derrick gets first round. Ramon comes out with a flurry to start the second but most of it was blocked. At the end of the barrage, Derrick landed a hard Left Hook to turn the round. At one point later in the round, Ramon turned around to avoid being hit. The ref stepped in to stop the punching but did not stop the fight and Garcia made it out of the round. Ramon got on his bike the rest of the fight. Neither fighter landed much in the third and Ramon actually landed more than Reed in the fourth but it was too little too late as Derrick earned a 39-37, 39-37, and 39-37 unanimous decision. John Vaughn (0-0) vs. Lance Moody (1-2-1) Lance got off to a good start by getting an early knockdown when he hit John when John was off balance. John easily made the eight count and finished out the round. Lance gets first round due to knockdown. Vaughn turned things around quickly in the second round. He got two knockdowns right out of the gate using Left Hook to the body, Left Hook to the head, and a Right Cross to the head. He followed up the two knockdowns with a Straight Right for a KO victory at 0:45 of the second round. Sandra Ortiz (Smo Reed) (0-0) vs. Katie Shadwell (0-0) It was a close first round with Smo landing cleaner punches. Smo took over in the second enough so the the ref stepped in at 1:38 of the second for a TKO victory for Smo. Dominique Alexander (8-1) vs. Vance Wynn (6-15-2) Vance came out with heavy Right Hooks to the body looking for a quick finish. Alexander withstood the attack and took over the round. I noticed Wynn pawing at his eye in the second half of the round. Vance did not answer the bell for the second round due to double vision. Dominique get a TKO at 3:00 of the first round. Michi Munoz (1-0) vs. Jesse Phillips (1-0) All Michi from the outset. Michi used all his punches - Left Hooks to the body and head, Right Upper Cuts, and a beautiful Left/Right. After all of this, the ref stepped in to save Phillips serious injury and Michi gets a TKO victory at 2:25 of the first round. Jason Kooser (5-1) vs. Ron Jackson (0-0) Active first round mostly owned by Kooser; however, Jackson did land a good Over Hand Right. Kooser does get the round. Ron was out of gas going into the second and the ref eventually stopped the fight at 2:57 of second round. Mike McGuire (0-1) vs. Steve Schneider (Caveman) (0-0) This was Steve's first pro boxing match after many no holds barred matches. First round to Steve who landed more shots. It was a slow second round with Steve ending with a flurry to steal the round. Steve definitely landed more in the third round while Mike definitely landed more in the fourth round. Now to the interesting decision. 38-38, 38-38, and 40-36 for Steve. This nets out at a majority draw. Damon Reed (38-9) vs. Dennis Matthews (9-25) Slow first round with Damon using movement to stifle any of Dennis' attack.. Damon upped the tempo in the second using one/two combinations to control the round. Damon increased the power on his one/two punches in the third but Dennis just kept coming. Not as many combos by Damon in the fourth round and Dennis landed some good shots on the inside but my guess is Damon gets the round. Damon again controlled the fifth round but Dennis would just step back after being hit as if to say "Come on, you can do better than that." Damon got his inside game working in the sixth round to finish out the fight. All three judges scored the fight 60-54 for Damon Reed. Raul Munoz (15-3) vs. Marc Thompson (9-0) The first round was a toss-up as Marc used movement while Raul stalked him down. Now the second round saw all kinds of fireworks. Raul caught Marc with a Left Hook that sent Marc down for an eight count. Shortly after he got up, Raul again caught Marc and this time Marc barely made the eight count. As Raul came in for the kill, Marc answered the attack with punches of his own and caught Raul with a Right Cross to stagger him. Marc say this and attacked Raul on the ropes eventually knocking him down for an eight count of his own. Now it is Marc on the offensive. Both men are standing in the middle of the ring trading shots when Marc landed a huge Right Cross that knocked Raul out on contact. Raul went down and tried to get up but his body simply would not cooperate. Marc gets the KO victory at 2:02 of the second round. What a fight.
