It was an action packed night of boxing at the St. Joseph Civic Arena.  There were ten bouts.  Four ended in the 1st, two ended in the second, and the other four went either the distance or to the final round.

Chris Gorham (0-2-1) vs. Jose Sosa (3-0)

This one was quick.  Jose threw a few lead Lefts then landed a Left/Right/Left combination that sent Chris down for the count at 1:03 of the 1st round.  Another quick fight for Jose.

Craig Dydell (0-0) vs. Grant Hartwig (0-0)

Craig landed three Left Jabs early to gain control of the round then a quick Over-Hand Right that knocked Grant down.  Grant did get up before the eight count but did not have control of his balance so the ref stopped the fight at 2:05 of the 1st round.

Darwin Doney (0-0) vs. Ismael Reyna (0-0)

This was a battle by what I would call super-heavyweights.  Doney weighed in at 347 pounds.  My initial thought was this would be ugly because both guys were making their professional debut.  Boy was I wrong.  This fight was filled with action from start to finish.

Darwin used a stiff Left Jab to completely control the 1st round.  Darwin began the 2nd round with a Left Jab/Right Cross combination that knocked Ismael down.  Ismael easily made the eight count and did not appear hurt.  After the knockdown, Darwin went back to mainly throwing the stiff Left Jabs.  Ismael was using movement to avoid the jabs but Darwin continued to land.  Round 3 was closer as Reyna landed some nice shots; however, they did not seem to affect Doney.  The jabs by Doney were again the story of the 3rd round.  Both fighters went for broke in the 4th round.  It was amazing to see these two big guys fight at this kind of pace.  Darwin landed better punches in the round only to prove that Ismael could take a punch.  Reyna was his most affective of the night in the 4th round but it was not enough.  Here is how the judges scored the fight: 40-35, 40-35, and 39-36 for the unanimous decision to Darwin Doney.

Adolph Moreno (0-2) vs. Ryan Ault (0-0)

This was the quickest fight of the night.  Ryan got Adolph against the ropes and landed five, six, seven .. I don't know how many, Left Hooks to the face and Adolph went down.  Adolph did beat the eight count but was in no condition to continue so the ref stopped the fight at 0:26 of the 1st round.

Holley Shores (3-0-1) vs. Cordellia Wilson (2-0)

These two women totally ignored defense and hammered on each other the entire fight.  The crowd was in a frenzy by the time this fight ended.

What a 1st round with both women trading shots.  Cordellia got off early until Holley landed four heavy shots to take control of the round and get round 1.  The 2nd round was close that I gave to Cordellia.  Holley landed some good shots but Cordellia landed more and earned the round due to amount of work.  Shores regained control in the 3rd round by again landing multiple heavy shots.  The fourth round was a barn burner.  Both women were throwing hay-makers with Holley landing 8 to 10 Left Hooks to easily win the 4th round.  Now to the score cards: 40-36, 38-38, and 39-37 for a majority decision for Holley Shores.

Gary Dydell (4-0) vs. Hubaldo Larios (0-0)

Don't let the records fool you in this match-up.  These two big guys (Dydell 210 and Larios 212) both fought their hearts out.

Close 1st round as both fighters had their moments.  I give the round to Larios because he was able to use his Right Upper-Cut when Dydell would lower his head.  Gary gets the 2nd round as he controlled most of the round by landing many wide Left Hooks.  Hubaldo did come on the last 30 seconds of round 2 but it was too late.  Total action in the 3rd round.  Larios landed more shots as Gary began to tire.  By the end of round 3, Gary was barely able to hang on due to exhaustion.  The 4th round was a toss-up as again both guys went for broke.  They had to be fighting on pure heart at this point and they still had two rounds to go.  The 5th round was once again action packed.  This time, Hubaldo got a knockdown with a Left Upper-Cut.  Gary was able to get up and actually take control of the 5th round late.  Dydell began the 6th round with a heart barrage because he was obviously exhausted.  Gary got Larios against the ropes and unloaded both hands.  The only thing keeping Larios up were the ropes and he was getting hit with unblocked shots.  The ref finally stepped in and stopped the fight at 0:46 of the 6th round.  Hubaldo's corner was very upset at the stoppage but the ref made the right decision from my point of view.

Ragan Pudwill (3-11) vs. Franchesca Alcanter

Toss-up 1st round as both fighters showed good technical skills but no one took control.  Plenty of action in the 2nd round by Franchesca.  Many punches were blocked by Ragan but plenty more landed.  Not as much action in 3rd round until late when Alcanter forced the action.  Franchesca again won each exchange in the 4th round.  The 5th round was identical to the 4th with Alcanter beating Pudwill to the punch.  Ragan did pick up her pace in the 6th round but it was too little too late as Franchesca won a unanimous decision 60-54 on all three judges' cards.

Brian Sargent (16-13) vs. Tony Tubbs (41-10)

Sargent probably thought he could take the older Tubbs.  Well, he was wrong.  Tubbs simply had too much hand speed.  Brian never even got a meaningful shot off before he was on the canvas.  It did take Tubbs 1:25 to get the KO victory but Sargent never landed a punch that I saw.

Travis Hartman (2-0-1) vs. Steve Arizola (7-9)

Travis dominated round 1 using a quick Left Jab and movement.  Two other flurries locked down round 1 for Hartman.  Shortly into the 2nd round, Travis landed two Left Hooks followed by a Right Cross that sent Steve to the canvas.  While accepting the eight count, Steve was looking at his corner telling him to wait for the eight count.  Unfortunately for Steve, he missed the eight count and the ref stopped the fight.  Steve was stunned but he simply missed the count.  Hartman gets the victory at 1:03 of the 2nd round.

Rob Calloway (46-5-1) vs. Andy Sample (29-8-2)

Calloway was obviously on a mission.  Rob got two knockdowns in the 1st round.  At one point between the two knockdowns, Sample motioned that he wanted more.  He got it and did not like it.  Sample did attempt to use his jab but Rob was just too quick.  Two more knockdowns in the 2nd round ended the fight at 1:38.  Andy may have skills but no where near those of Calloway in this fight.  It's not like Sample didn't try; it's just that it was not good enough.
