Topeka Saturday Night Slugfest March 20 2004

Event was held at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka, Kansas.

Review by Mark Graves

A night full of fighting with eleven fights on the card.

Will Evens vs Chuck Cox

Both landed some good shots in the first but Will's were cleaner.  Chuck took a few punches in the second before a body shot (or low blow) put him down for an eight count.  Two more knockdowns by Will before a Straight Right brought an end to this fight.  Evans gets a TKO victory at 1:59 of the first round.

Derrick Reed vs Mike Richardson

Derrick opened with a Left Jab that staggered Mike.  Mikes response was to throw many punches with no avail.  The technique for his punches were suspect at best and comical at worst.  Finally, Derrick opened up and Mike folded.  Reed gets the KO at 1:20 of the first round.

Tommy Cott vs Roger Sanders

Tommy never had a chance.  Roger got Tommy in a corner and punched until Tommy went down for safety.  Not much later the ref stopped the fight due to a barrage of punches by Sanders.

Jason Kooser vs Calvin Reese

Calvin came out firing.  All he accomplished was to punch himself out.  Jason threw a punch that barely hit Reese.  Regardless of the "power" of the punch, Calvin took a knee and did not get up until the ten count.  KO victory by Kooser at 1:56 of first round.

Shannon Woodward vs Elmer Pete Crowdin

Great first round.  Both men landed punches.  I give the first to Shannon because he staggered Pete a couple times.  Second round to Pete.  He got the lead with body punches and landed some good hooks to the head.  The third round was a toss-up in my as Shannon landed more at the start of the round but Pete came on strong at the end.  The fourth round was again a toss-up.  The judges gave the decision to Pete.  No scores were announced.

Karl Evans vs Dominique Alexander

This match-up paired two fighters drastically different in size.   Karl was at least a foot shorter than Dominique.  Dominique took advantage of his height advantage by circling the ring thus not allowing Karl to get inside.  Alexander got the first and second round because Karl simply could not reach him.  However in the third, either Karl figured out how to cut the ring off or Dominique was tiring a bit,  because Karl was able to throw and land enough punches to get the third round.  The fourth round was close but Karl's leaping punches were not enough to keep Alexander from getting the decision victory.  Again no scores were announced.

Marc Thompson vs Chris Regular

It was an ugly first round as the fighters stayed close together and not many punches were landed.  The best punch was landed by Marc but Chris landed more in the first.  Chris also got the second round.  The third round was easily Chris' because Marc only covered up and did not throw many punches.  The fourth round was a replay of the third.  Chris finally gets a knockdown in the fifth when Marc took a knee as a break from the onslaught but the ref called it a slip.  The sixth round was the same as the rest as Chris threw punches and Marc did not.  Unanimous decision to Chris Regular.

Raul Munoz vs Kenny Underhill

All I can say is a Left Hook by Raul ended fight quickly.  So fast they did not even announce the time of the KO.

Damon Reed vs Darin Humphries

Not much happened in the first.  I guess more work by Darin in the second round.  Again, I think Darin landed better punches in the third.  Damon took control in the fourth.  Darin looked bad at end of fourth.  Left/Right combo by Damon stunned Darin in the fifth round.  Some low blows were landed by Darin in sixth.  The sixth round was a toss-up.  Damon with more work in seventh to get round.  I believe Damon got the eighth round as well.  Over all it was an ugly fight with lots of clutching and a few low blows.  Not too bad though as Damon got the unanimous decision.

Matt Gockel vs Ron Collins

Matt got a KO victory with a Straight Left at 0:47 of the first round.

Kevin Duermeier vs Ethan Tice

Kevin got the KO victory at 1:06 of the first round.  Even though it was quick, Kevin threw nice straight punches for a pro debut.
