GREG PAGE BENEFIT March 4 2005 Event was held at the St. Joseph Civic Arena in St.
Joseph, Missouri. Greg Page Benefit Press Release Jason Redmond (217) vs. Van
Dillard (215)
Jason Redmond (2-0-1) vs. Van Dillard (0-0) Van's strategy was to throw Jason around the ring. Unfortunately, punching was not included in his strategy. Van spent the first round pushing Jason around the ring. He even pushed Jason to the canvas more than once including pushing him further to the floor when he was already down. He was warned a couple times during the round. When Jason was not being pushed around, he would be able to land Left Jab/ Right Cross combinations. Jason easily won the first round. The second round was much like the first so the referee called time and took one or two points away from Dillard. I saw two fingers which lead me to believe he was taking two points away the first time. Not that it mattered. While the points were being taken away, Dillard walked to his corner and shook his head telling them he was done and the ref was forced the stop the fight at 1:31 of the second round for a TKO victory for Jason Redmond. Jason was very disgusted but there was nothing he could do about it either. Adolph Moreno (0-3) vs. Aaron Boldridge (0-5) In what could have been the ugliest display of the sweet science, Aaron Boldridge gets a TKO victory at 1:37 of the first round. I will leave it at that. Joseph Hill (0-0) vs. Paul Sanchez (0-0) I was not sure what Paul's strategy was in this fight. My guess is he was too nervous to put his training into practice. Paul would put one glove on each cheek, lean over, and charge in. Hill's corner kept telling him, "All you had to do is step to your left and you will be able to land clean Left Hooks." It took Hill a while to believe his corner's advice but eventually he did and it worked. Sanchez went down three times during the first round. Sanchez was coming forward and Hill simply stepped aside, Sanchez went down like he was doing a push-up, and then got back up and kept fighting. No one in the ring even acknowledged Sanchez fell. I don't understand that at all. The second knockdown came from a Straight Left that Hill had laid out there for Sanchez to run into. When Paul came in, his face hit the extend glove and went down for an eight count. The final knockdown of the first round was called a slip. Joe Hill easily won the first round. Hill's confidence grew in the second round. He began to use his Right Jab and movement to keep Sanchez on the outside. Sanchez would only throw a punch if he was able to tie Hill up; he would land a punch or two in the side before the break. Hill's corner was calling for him to step to the side and throw Left Hooks and Left Upper-cuts. Hill listened and completely controlled the second round. The third round picked up where the second left off. Hill would step to the side and land Left Hooks and Left Upper-cuts. Shortly into the round, one of the Left Hooks landed flush and sent Sanchez around in a spin. Sanchez stayed down on his knee for a KO victory at 0:41 for Joe Hill. Darwin Doney (1-0) vs. Clinton Boldridge (2-2) Both fighters were committed to their Left Jab, but Clinton Boldridge's was more effective in the first. He was able to land more Jabs than Darwin and a few times was able to follow it up with a Right Cross. First round to Boldridge. Boldridge was able to continue beating Doney to the punch in the second round. This round, Clinton worked more combinations and body work. Darwin was looking to counter but Clinton was still too quick. The second round goes to Boldridge. The third round was a barn burner. Darwin was able to corner Clinton and unloaded combinations for a good thirty seconds. Clinton would throw a punch every now and then so the ref would not stop the fight. Finally, when Darwin took a break, Clinton came forward and landed a good Right Hand. This sent Doney to the ropes where Clinton unloaded shot after shot unblocked to the face of Doney. After the fourth or fifth clean punch, referee Mike England stepped in and stopped the fight. Darwin's face was all bloody and he was really beat-up. I don't know if Darwin would have ever fallen but he was taking an ugly beating. I felt it was a good stoppage but Darwin's corner was upset that it was stopped when it was. Clinton Boldridge earns a TKO victory at 2:36 of the third round. Jason Nicholson (17-21-2) vs. Tony Tubbs (46-10) Unfortunately the crowd did not understand why these guys had shirts and head-gear on. For the record, this was just an exhibition. Tony won this World Heavyweight Title from Greg Page and fought him many times as an amateur. Tony has been very active in rebuilding his career and had just fought and is schedule to fight again soon; therefore, this fight was just Tony's way of supporting the Greg Page Benefit. Holley Shores (4-0-1) vs. Gina Able (0-6) In typical Holley Shores style, Holley came in guns a blazin'. It took until 1:22 of the third round before Holley got the TKO victory but she was never in trouble. Gina was game but was clearly out classed. Travis Hartman (4-0-1) vs. Laron Stewart (1-4) The hand speed of Hartman was too much for Stewart in the first. Travis was able to land an array of punches. The most interesting was a Lead Left Hook which is his off hand. Stewart did try to make a fight of it but Travis' defense and movement was also more than Laron could handle. The first round to Travis. Travis came out in the second round and listened to his corner who was telling him to switch stances because Stewart was looking to counter. When Travis did switch, he landed Left Hooks and Left Upper-cuts. Once back in his natural stance, Travis threw a target Left Jab and a Straight Right Hand right down main street to the face of Laron Stewart. It was system shut-down for Stewart giving Hartman a KO victory at 1:30 of the second round. It was an impressive performance by Travis Hartman. Rob Calloway (52-5-1) vs. Daniel Frank (15-9-1) Calloway unloaded a Right Hand as his first meaningful punch that landed flush under Frank's Left Ear that caused Frank to fold to the canvas like a road map. The punch was so hard and so loud that I was certain Frank would not get up. He did somehow find a way to his feet at the count of seven but was facing the wrong direction and fell back into the ropes. This was the sign that the fight was over. Calloway had been interrupted during the press conference and obviously had issue with Frank and he served notice that you do not interrupt Rob Calloway during his press conference. WOW that was an awesome punch. Article has been accessed
