Return of Black and Blue Boxing January 22 2005 Event was held at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka,
Kansas. Derrick Reed vs. Alvin Smith Derrick Reed gets a TKO victory at 0:42 of the first against an opponent not committed to the fight. Mike McGuire vs. Todd Mansfield McGuire controlled the first round by forcing Mansfield to the ropes and nailing the high head stance of Mansfield. Credit should be given to Mansfield for finding a way to survive the round despite being hit with five or six Right Hooks to the head. Mansfield attempted to get off first in the second round but McGuire made him miss, forced Mansfield into the corner, and landed a Right Hook to the head that put Mansfield down for the count at 0:50 of the second round. Michie Munoz vs. Clifford Blake Michie completely dominated the first round. Nearly every punch including the Left Jab seemed to stagger Blake. Michie earned two eight counts in the first round to solidify the dominance. The second round continued like the first until a Left/Right/Upper-cut combination brought an end to the fight at 1:16 of the second round. Smo Ortiz vs. Crystal Hollenbeck Ortiz controlled this fight from the get go and it only took until 0:25 of the second round for her speed and power to overwhelm Hollenbeck. Kevin Sheppard vs. Dominique Alexander Alexander used Double Left Jabs, Double Left Hooks, and an occasional Straight Right to dominate the first round. When Sheppard did try to get inside, Alexander would tie up to stop the advance. Kevin resorted to antics to get the crowd involved. Unfortunately for Kevin, landed punches were harder to come by than the antics. The second round saw Alexander land Jabs and block Sheppard's Jabs with his Right Hand. Sheppard was able to get inside better in the third round to make the round closer but Dominique still won the round. Another round with Dominique using Left Jabs and Left Hooks to win the round. Sheppard is nice enough to stick out his face after getting hit just in case the judges missed it trying to indicate it did not hurt. Sheppard actually earned the fifth round with an effective use of two Left Hooks to the jaw of Alexander. Dominique regained control in the sixth round going back to Jabs and movement. All three judges scored the fight 60-53 for Dominique Alexander. Jon Vaughn won the first round by using his Left Jab, Left Hooks to the body, and Upper-cuts when on the inside. Jesse Phillips began the second round with a barrage of punches that Vaughn was able to withstand. After the barrage, Vaughn cornered Phillips and unloaded combinations to the body. During the action, Phillips mouth-piece came out which allowed him to get a break while it was cleaned and put back in his mouth. Once the break was over, Vaughn moved in and finished the fight with multiple body punches until the ref stopped the fight at 2:29 of the second round. Derrick Campos vs. Mike Mayley Derrick Campos won an action packed first round. Both fighters threw a lot of wide punches but Campos landed better shots including two Left Hooks to the body that turned Mayley sideways. Campos took immediate control of the second round with body punches and eventually cornered Mayley and pounded him until the ref stopped the fight at 1:42 of the second round. Dominating performance by Gockle in this fight. Right and Left Hooks to the body quickly chopped his opponent down and eventually earned a stoppage at 1:33 of the second round. I was really looking forward to this rematch. In the first match-up, both fighters met the canvas twice with Raul being the last to do so. Thompson landed a wicked Right Hand to the jaw of Munoz to send him face first into the mat for a convincing KO victory. Raul entered that fight in the favorites corner and things did not work out. This time it was Thompson in the favorites corner. Would he suffer the same fate as Raul in the rematch? The first round was uneventful as both fighters were apprehensive not wanting to get caught early. Neither fighter landed a meaningful punch although Thompson did at least land some to the gloves to earn the round. Action picked up in the second round. Raul caught Thompson in the corner and unloaded shots. It appeared that some of the body work might have hurt Thompson during the exchange. Marc turned the tables on Raul in the later portion of the round but Raul was able to block most of the punches. I give the second round to Raul. The third round was again slow. Thompson landed a Jab mid-round and then with about thirty seconds left in the round, he landed a good Straight Right Hand. That amount of work was enough to earn the round for Thompson. Munoz began to cut the ring off in the fourth round so that Thompson could not run. Raul used a Wide Left Hook to the body to stop Marc and then was able to throw meaningful punches to the body. During one of these moments, Marc's glove touched the canvas for an eight count. I don't know that Marc was all that hurt but he did touch the mat so Raul gets a 10-8 round. Raul continue his body attack in the fifth round. Late in the round, he again floored Thompson with a Hook to the body. This time though Thompson was in obvious discomfort when he got up because he pointed to his ribs - another 10-8 round for Munoz. The sixth round continued where the fourth and fifth had left off. The problem is this time when Thompson went down on all fours, Raul hit him in the head while he was down. Marc was obviously affected by this punch. While he was down, the ref indicated that it was a foul. It was announced that if Thompson would not be able to continue we would go the scorecards. After the allotted time, Thompson's corner indicated that he would not be able to go on. It was clear from ringside that he would/should not try to go on. During the waiting period, the referee and the presiding state official from Colorado conversed and it was learned that the punch was deemed intentional. That means that Marc Thompson was awarded the victory via disqualification. A very disappointing end to the fight. However, it does cry out for a third fight which again I would really look forward to. Article has been accessed
