Sumya Anani Shines in supporting role to Calloway Blowout
By Dave McKee (At Ringside)
WBF Intercontinental Heavyweight Champion Rob “All
American Prizefighter” Calloway faced relative unknown Jeff Pegues
December 3rd at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City.
Calloway’s belt was not at risk, though Alvin “Quickster” Brown and
Angelo Torres did debate ownership of the Vacant WBF Americas
Featherweight title and Sumya Anani risked her WIBA Light Welterweight
belt against tough former Golden Gloves champion Stephanie Jaramillo.
Shortly after the opening bell Calloway greeted the
overmatched Pegues with a powerful overhand right followed by a stiff
left upper cut. The remainder of the round saw Calloway charitably
allowing Pegues to fire off a few jabs while maintaining firm control of
the fight. In the second round Calloway’s samaritanship ended with an
overhand right that stunned Pegues. A right and left hook combination
dropped Pegues, who bravely rose at nine. Calloway then practiced
his uppercuts, landing a right and a left to finish Mr. Pegues off at
2:37 of round two.
In a much more evenly matched bout, former IBA and
NABC Featherweight champ Alvin “Quickster” Brown met journeyman Angelo
Torres to fight for the Vacant WBF Americas Featherweight Title.
Brown found Torres’ body early with a left, but
seemed cold the remainder of round one as Torres simply out punched
him. Torres woke the Quickster up with two sharp left hands in the
second round, and was rewarded a couple of uppercut combos to the body
in a round that saw Alvin announce his presence in the ring.
Round three was relatively quiet, with Torres again
more productive and Brown fighting flat footed for the last minute and
half. Alvin unveiled his jab to great effect in the fourth until Torres
moved him against the ropes and fired off a left hook loaded with
buckshot against his head. In the fifth round, in a sequence that
foreshadowing the remainder of the night, Brown had the edge in the
first half of the round, painting Torres with leather through the first
half only to tire and succumb to another left hook to the head later in
the round.
Torres worked Brown’s chest with uppercuts in the
sixth, and the Quickster seemed to be mired in quicksand as his energy
levels visibly drained. Torres was strong and fresh in the seventh,
shooting Brown’s punches out of the air with his gloves and pounding him
with a strong counter left. Brown rallied in the eighth, striking
Torres with a strong left uppercut followed by a flurry of activity.
Unfortunately this left him drained once more, and he again proved
susceptible to the counter left.
The fight continued in this manner until the
twelfth round. With Torres in the corner Brown slipped in a low blow
past the sight of the referee. Torres was visibly shaken and fought out
of the corner with great difficulty. He fought through this with
tremendous composure and took over the fight to close strong.
Angelo Torres became a champion by way of split
decision. The judges scored the bought 116-113 & 116-112 for Torres
with the third judged dissenting with a score of 115-113 for Brown. RSR
scored the bout 116-112 for Torres.
In the most impressive extended display of the
night WIBA Light Welterweight champion Sumya Anani accepted the
challenge of Stephanie Jaramillo. Jaramillo, a former Golden Gloves
champion, proved to be an exceptionally tough lady, but she was simply
not up to the challenge of defeating Sumya Anani, who shares with Laila
Ali the distinction of being the only women to defeat Christy Martin in
the past decade.
Anani began the fight at a virtual standstill,
landing nothing significant in the first round. Jaramillo slipped in a
few taps to steal the round. In the second round Anani poured on the
aggression. Jaramillo’s primary tactic was the clench, and she was
rewarded with punishment to the ribs and kidneys. In the third round
Jaramillo measured Anani’s attack more effectively, landing a number of
counter rights. Anani, however, responded with combinations to
Jaramillo’s attic.
The fight turned on a shot to Jaramillo’s nose in
the fourth. She began to bleed heavily, and it was evident her nose was
broken. The remainder of the fight saw Anani targeting the broken nose,
sending blood spraying down Jaramillo’s face. The latter kept her
gloves glued to her cheeks and slipped into a purely defensive posture.
Jaramillo was sent to the canvas by a cruel shot to
her shattered nose in the ninth, and her fortunes worsened in the tenth
when the referee deducted a point for holding.
Sumya took an easy unanimous decision over the
gutsy, but overmatched Jaramillo with scores of 100-88, 99-89, and
100-88. RSR scored the bout 99-88.
