Team Calloway: March Badness March 12 2004

Event was held at the St. Joseph Civic Arena.

Review by Mark Graves

The night was filled with quick knockouts after the first two fights.  Only one fight went the distance.

Charles Tucker (0-0) vs. Steve Yancey (1-1)

Charles showed a nice jab in the first and knocked Steve down three times.  One appeared questionable but the other two were legit.  Both fighters were tired in the second which gave Steve a chance to throw some punches that gave Charles a bloody nose.  Despite being tire, Charles knocked down Steve again in the third round; however, Steve got up and continued to battle.  After the second knock down in the fourth round, the referee stopped the fight.  Steve was not happy about the stoppage but he had little to no chance of knocking Charles out which he would have to of done to win this fight.  Charles by TKO at 2:04 of fourth round.

Calvin Miller vs Replacement

Calvin Miller outworked a replacement fighter (I missed the announced name) that appeared to have more skills just not more inclination to throw a punch.  Calvin won a unanimous decision.  I really felt that Calvin's opponent was a better fighter.  He showed great defense and crisp punches when he decided to throw them; however, he hardly threw any punches.  I thought he won the first round with quick jabs and a good Over-Hand Right.  The second and third round to Calvin because he only face five meaningful punches in each round.  Too little too late for Calvin's opponent in the fouth.

Gary Dydell vs Richard Hoffman

Major mismatch with Gary getting the KO at 0:51 of the first.

Bill Johnson vs John Turlington

I missed the first round because there was a near fight right behind my seat.  Fortunately cooler heads prevailed and order was restored.  The second round was controlled by Turlington who punctuated the round with a late knockdown.  That late knockdown kept Johnson in the corner at the bell for the third round giving Turlington a TKO victory at 3:00 of the second round.

Travis Hartman vs Anthony Nelson

Travis begins his pro career after posting a (156-13) amateur record.  His opponent began the fight by charging across the ring and nearly tackling Travis.  It was a very ragged first round with a point being deducted from Anthony for his tactics.  Hartman was very frustrate by Nelson's tactics but was able to show a good jab when given the chance.  Travis landed some good punches late in the second which apparently broke Anthony's will because he did not answer the bell for the third round.  Travis gets a TKO victory at 3:00 of the second round.

Rob Calloway (43-4-1) vs Dino Salcedo (10-8)

Very little work by Calloway in the first but that would change in the second.  He caught Dino and Ko'd him in the second.  I expected more out of Dino but Rob was too much.
